Apple on Thursday discontinued two of the cheapest iPod models: the nano and shuffle. The company removed the iPod nano and iPod shuffle from its website. This has been confirmed by a statement from Apple, it will soon vanish from retail locations as well.
“Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod Touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano.”Apple said in a statement.
This comes less than three years after the same thing happened to the iPod classic. Apple discontinued the iPod classic in 2014, a large iPod with a “click wheel” that looked most like the original model. Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said at the time that the classic was discontinued because the company was unable to source the necessary parts.
The original iPod was Apple’s version of the MP3 music player and was the first device to make Apple the superstar consumer product company it is today. Apple soon unveiled spinoffs of the product including the iPod nano and the iPod shuffle. The Apple iPod touch was introduced on September 5th, 2007, not long after the launch of the Apple iPhone.
For the Apple iPod touch, this is the first update since 2015. The device will now be offered with 32GB of native storage for $199 and with 128GB of storage for $299. Previously, the device was available with 16GB and 64GB of native storage at the same price points. Company has already made the appropriate changes on its website.
The Apple iPod touch features a 4” (640 x 1136). The device is powered by a dual-core Apple A8 chipset with the M8 motion co-processor and offers 1GB of RAM. On back it sports an 8MP camera with f/2.4 aperture. On the front i feature 1.2MP front-facing FaceTime camera with f/2.2 aperture. It is backed by a 1043mAh battery.
