Apple Wireless Charging Technology Could Transfer Power Wirelessly Between Devices

A new patent by Apple published at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USTPO) for charging Apple devices in an interesting manner emerged. According to the patent, a wireless charging coil capable of bi-directional current has been made by Apple.  Although, it would be a clever thing to be included but as we have witnessed all the patents are never implemented in the product line.

The images of the patent suggest that use of such coils in notebooks, with drawings of a MacBook seeming to show potential coil positions on the trackpad and to each side which might add multiple coils to a larger device and could allow it to provide charge to multiple smaller devices like an iPhone and an Apple Watch at the same time. The device would charge or be charged depending on whether it’s in front or behind the other device. Another possibility which emerges from the images could be stacking of devices but the position remains unclear.

The question with the patent arises of the setting of multiple coils which could switch between receiving and transmitting which would require a different hardware as among the present products of Apple no product uses induction coil for wireless charging of devices.

The “Inductive charging between electronic devices” patent application was filed on March 19 and is a continuation of an earlier similarly-titled patent application from June 2015. Earlier in the year Patently Apple stated that the two patents describe wireless charging methods, the ability to charge multiple devices at once, an option to choose which devices are charged first and under what circumstances and the possibility of tucking wireless charging equipment inside other structures, such as furniture or vehicles have been applied.
